Bipolar Disorder. Manic Depression. These are terms often responsible for causing fear in those not afflicted, and panic in those diagnosed.

Do you or someone you love suffer from manic depression? Has bipolar disorder affected the way you live your life, and your outlook on life?

If you are among the millions of people that suffers daily from the euphoric highs and depressive lows that come with this confusing disorder, you are not alone.

According To The National Institutes Of Mental Health, More Than 5.7% American Adults May Suffer From Bipolar Disorder Each Year...

That is almost 3% of the population. Most people are not diagnosed until they are adults.

In fact, most of the time bipolar disorder will not manifest until after age 25, at least according to the NIMH.

Many people diagnosed with this disorder instantly panic at the idea of having a lifelong disease. Bipolar disorder, or manic depression, is not really a disease.

Bipolar is a mental disorder that results in a complex array of symptoms, including physical, physiological and emotional symptoms, which may include:

  • Anxiety

  • Depression

  • Paranoia

  • Euphoria

  • Excessive spending

  • Suicidal tendencies

  • Reckless behavior

  • Feelings of worthlessness

  • Exaggerated sense of wellness or grandiosity

  • Loss of touch with reality

  • Overwhelming confusion

These are but a few of the confusing and often interchangeable symptoms of bipolar disorder.

Many patients suffer in silence, not realizing their symptoms and behaviors are treatable and manageable. Others suffer in silence, for fear of what others may think should they learn of their disorder.

Many patients with bipolar disorder feel like they have lost the ability to confide in those who surround and support them.

People with bipolar disorder may lose touch with reality, and panic when they feel they don’t have control or someone they can rely on to help them gain stability.

Where these are concerned, we've come a long way in terms of tolerance, fairness and sensitivity to the feelings of others; as a rule, words are chosen carefully so as not to offend and legislation ensures fair treatment.
